Intermolecular Forces and Boiling Points
For simple molecules boiling temperatures are determined by the strength of the intermolecular force.
For alkanes this is London forces.
As the length of the carbon chain increases there are more points of contact so the overall force of attraction from London forces increases.

Key terms in this lesson
- hydrogen bond
- A strong dipole attraction between a lone pair on a highly electronegative N, O or F atom and an H atom bonded to N, O or F.
- london forces
- Weak intermolecular forces caused by instantaneous dipoles inducing dipoles in neighbouring molecules, present between all molecules.
