With a projectile, after the initial force which is used to set the object in motion, the only force of significance acting on the projectile is the force due to gravity.
The horizontal and vertical motions are independent of each other.
Horizontally there is no force acting on the object and the object continues in a state of uniform motion in a straight line(Newton's 1st Law).
