Test for carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide is a colourless gas that is made when carbonates react with acids and when fuels burn. To test for it, use limewater, which is an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide. Limewater is clear and colourless at the start.

Either shake the gas with a little limewater in a test tube, or bubble the gas through the limewater. If the gas is carbon dioxide, the limewater turns milky, which is also described as cloudy.

A gas that does not turn limewater milky is not carbon dioxide.
