  1. Oxidation and ReductionOxidation was used to describe a reaction in which oxygen was added to an element or oxygen was used to remove hydrogen from an element.
  2. Ionic Half EquationsOxidation is the loss of electrons.
  3. Oxidising and Reducing AgentsAny species that accepts electrons from another species is an oxidising agent because the other species has been oxidised.
  4. Oxidation StateOxidation is the addition of oxygen, removal of hydrogen, the loss of electrons or the increase in oxidation number.
  5. Rules for Oxidation StateRules for oxidation number: The oxidation number for uncombined elements is zero and for an ion is the charge of the ion.
  6. Working Out Oxidation StatesFirst use the rules to work out the oxidation state of the more electronegative element.
  7. SuperoxideWhen potassium is heated with oxygen a white solid K2O and an orange-yellow compound KO2 are formed.
  8. Redox EquationsYou can use oxidation numbers to help you understand redox reactions.
  9. Redox Reactions in Aqueous SolutionsSome species in aqueous solutions are neither oxidised or reduced.
  10. Thermite ReactionThe thermite reaction is an exothermic reaction in which aluminium reacts with iron(III) oxide.
  11. Half Equations from Ionic EquationsHalf equations can be derived from net ionic equations. for example 3Cu(s) + 8H+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) → 3Cu2+ (aq) + 2NO(g) + 4H2O(l) The half ionic…
