Using Microwaves
Microwaves can be used to demonstrate the wave properties reflection, refraction, diffraction, interference and polarisation.
The transmitter produces 3.0cm microwaves.
A receiver connected to a meter measures the intensity of the waves.

Key terms in this lesson
- Diffraction
- The spreading out of waves as they pass through a gap or around an obstacle.
- Interference
- The formation of points of cancellation and reinforcement where two coherent waves overlap and superpose.
- Polarisation
- The restriction of the oscillations of a transverse wave to a single plane; only transverse waves can be polarised.
- Refraction
- The change of direction of a wave as it crosses a boundary between two media in which it travels at different speeds.
