Key terms in this lesson
- Photon
- A discrete packet, or quantum, of electromagnetic energy.
- Ionisation
- The removal of one or more electrons from a neutral atom, or the addition of electrons, to form an ion.
- Excitation
- The process by which an electron in an atom gains energy and moves to a higher, unoccupied energy level.
- De-excitation
- The process by which an electron in an excited atom falls to a lower energy level, emitting a photon whose energy equals the difference between the two levels.
- Potential difference
- The energy transferred per unit charge as charge moves between two points in a circuit.
