Uses of Group 2 Compounds
Calcium hydroxide is added to the soil as lime to increase the pH of acidic soils. Ca(OH)2 + 2H+ → Ca2+(aq) + 2H2O(l)
Group 2 bases are also used as antacids to treat heartburn and indigestion. Magnesium and calcium carbonates are usually used. Milk of magnesia is suspension of magnesium hydroxide in water. The acid in the stomach in mainly hydrochloric acid.
