Crude oil contains sulfur and nitrogen. During the combustion of alkanes, sulfur dioxide may be formed. SO2 reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere to form sulfur trioxide and can dissolve in water in the atmosphere to form acid rain. The high temperatures in internal combustion engines (vehicles) cause nitrogen in the air to react with oxygen in the air. This forms oxides of nitrogen which can react with water in the atmosphere to form nitric acid.
