Catalytic converters are fitted to car exhaust systems to reduce pollution. These use platinum, rhodium and palladium spread thinly over a honeycomb mesh to remove carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and unburnt hydrocarbons.Carbon monoxide reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide whilst NO reacts with CO to form nitrogen gas and carbon dioxide.
