Incomplete Combustion

When there is a limited supply of oxygen, alkanes burn to produce either carbon monoxide or carbon. The other product is water. Carbon monoxide is toxic as it binds to haemoglobin in red blood cells and stops it from carrying oxygen to the tissues.Incomplete combustion also releases unburnt hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. Some other compounds produced during the combustion of alkanes are pollutants.
