The cytoskeleton is an extensive network of long, fibres and elements that provide shape, movement and anchorage for cells.
Microtubules are the largest elements and are made from globular protein subunits called alpha-tubulin and beta-tubulin. These molecules join together in a tight spiral to form long hollow tubes and form a dense network throughout the cell.
