Gas Exchange in Fish

AQA AS-level BiologyExchange of GasesLesson 12 of 28

All gas exchange systems must supply oxygen to respiring tissues and remove carbon dioxide produced by respiration rapidly enough.

In fish the distance between the environment and the individual cells of the tissues is relatively short.

Mass transport achieves efficient transport of gas over large distances, requires energy and does not occur across tissue barriers. Diffusion achieves gas transport across barriers.

Key terms in this lesson

diffusion
The net passive movement of molecules or ions from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient.
countercurrent exchange
A system in which two fluids flow in opposite directions, maintaining a concentration gradient along the whole length of the exchange surface and maximising diffusion.
