Free Body Force Diagrams
A free-body force diagram isolates all the forces acting on an object.
All bodies are modelled as point objects with the weight acting at the centre. Equal length arrows acting in opposite direction indicate forces in equilibrium.
The object is considered in isolation. Only the forces in contact with the object and the non-contact forces acting on the object are considered.

Key terms in this lesson
- Equilibrium
- An object is in equilibrium when the resultant force and the resultant moment acting on it are both zero.
- Centre of mass
- The single point at which the entire weight of an object may be considered to act.
- Resistance
- The ratio of the potential difference across a component to the current flowing through it, measured in ohms.
