A magnetic field is a field of force surrounding a magnet or a current carrying wire or conductor. In a bar magnet, the field is at its strongest at the poles and a freely suspended bar magnet will align itself with the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field. The direction of a magnetic field is from north to south. It is the direction in which a north pole would travel if it were free to move.
