Charge, current and time

The amount of charge that flows past a point depends on the current and on how long it flows for. The relationship is: charge flow = current × time, or Q = I t.

Charge, Q, is measured in coulombs (C). Current, I, is measured in amperes (A), often called amps. Time, t, is measured in seconds (s). If a time is given in minutes you must change it to seconds before you use the equation.

Example 1: a current of 2 A flows for 5 s. Q = 2 × 5 = 10 C.
Example 2: a current of 3 A flows for 2 minutes. The time is 2 × 60 = 120 s, so Q = 3 × 120 = 360 C.
You can rearrange the equation to find current, I = Q / t. Example 3: 24 C flows in 6 s, so I = 24 / 6 = 4 A.
