Empirical Formula

AQA AS-level ChemistryOrganic ChemistryLesson 2 of 17

The empirical formula is the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.

For example, ethane has the molecular formula C2H6 and the empirical formula CH3.

To find the empirical formula from mass or percentage data: divide the mass or percentage of each element by its Ar, then divide each answer by the smallest value to get the ratio.
