Phenols have a hydroxyl group attached directly to the benzene ring.Phenol is solid at room temperature and slightly soluble in water. When dissolved in water phenol is weakly acidic as it partially ionises to form a phenoxide ion and a hydrogen ion.Phenol reacts with a reactive metal such as sodium to produce a salt and hydrogen gas.
