Measuring Enzyme-Catalysed Reactions
Factors affecting the activity of an enzyme will be factors that influence the ability of the substrate to bind to the active site and form enzyme-substrate complexes.
These include:
- limiting factors such as substrate concentration and enzyme concentration.
- inhibitors (competitive and non-competitive) which prevent the binding of the substrate to the active site.
- any change affecting the environment that leads to a change in the shape of the active site of the enzyme such as temperature and pH.

Key terms in this lesson
- active site
- The region of an enzyme, formed by the tertiary structure, with a shape complementary to its substrate, where the substrate binds.
- enzyme-substrate complex
- The temporary structure formed when a substrate binds to the active site of an enzyme.
