Anabolic steroids can be used to gain muscle mass. Their use in professional and amateur sports is banned. They are small molecules that are excreted in the urine. Since the half-life is about 16 hours the urine can be tested by analysing a small urine sample with gas chromatography against a test sample containing a known drug or anabolic steroid.
