Mimosa pudica contains a toxic alkaloid and has a sharp prickly stem which helps protect it against herbivores. If the leaves are touched, they fold and collapse downwards. This may frighten off large herbivores and dislodge small insects. The leaf recovers in a about 10 minutes as a result of the movement of potassium ions and water following by osmosis.
