A scalar quantity has magnitude, which means size, but no specific direction. A scalar is fully described by a number and a unit. A mass of 3 kg or a distance of 200 m needs nothing more to be understood.
Distance, speed, mass and energy are scalar quantities. Turning a 3 kg bag to point north or south does not change its mass, and an amount of energy does not point anywhere. Scalar quantities add up by ordinary arithmetic: 2 kg of sand and 3 kg of sand make 5 kg of sand.
