Examples of vectors and scalars

You need to recall which quantities are vectors and which are scalars. The vectors are displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, weight and momentum. Each of these has a magnitude and a direction.

The scalars are distance, speed, mass and energy. Each of these has magnitude only. Notice that the first two pair up with vectors: distance is a scalar and displacement is a vector, speed is a scalar and velocity is a vector.

Mass and weight are also different in this way. Mass is the amount of matter in an object, so it is a scalar. Weight is the force of gravity acting on a mass, so it is a vector.
