Emission and absorption of infrared radiation

All objects, whatever their temperature, emit and absorb infrared radiation. Your desk, a cup of tea and a block of ice are all doing it right now. The hotter an object is, the more infrared radiation it radiates in a given time.

Some surfaces take in radiation better than others. A perfect black body is an object that absorbs all of the radiation that hits it. It does not reflect or transmit any radiation.

A good absorber of radiation is also a good emitter. This means a perfect black body would be the best possible emitter.
