The Quark Model
Quarks are fundamental particles. There are 3 types of quarks we will meet at A level: up(u), down(d) and strange(s).
| u | d | s | |
| charge | +&frac23 | -&frac13 | -&frac13 |
| strangeness | 0 | 0 | -1 |
| baryon number | +&frac13 | +&frac13 | +&frac13 |

Key terms in this lesson
- Hadron
- A particle made up of quarks that interacts through the strong interaction; hadrons are divided into baryons and mesons.
- Baryon
- A hadron made of three quarks, for example the proton and the neutron.
- Meson
- A hadron made of a quark-antiquark pair, for example the pion and the kaon.
