Sustainable fisheries

Fish stocks in the oceans are declining. It is important to maintain fish stocks at a sustainable level, where enough fish are left for breeding to continue. If too many fish are caught, certain species may disappear altogether in some areas.

Two methods play an important role in conservation. The first is control of net size. Nets with larger holes let young fish escape, so they can grow up and breed. The second is the introduction of fishing quotas, which set a limit on how many fish of a species can be caught.

Applying these techniques promotes the recovery of fish stocks, so that fishing can carry on in the future.
