Variation occurs as a result of random mutations and is important for the process of natural selection. There are two types of variation. Inter-specific and intra-specific. Inter-specific variation is variation between different species. Intra-specific variation is variation within the same species.

- The set of rules by which the sequence of bases in DNA is translated into the sequence of amino acids in a protein; it is a triplet, degenerate, universal and non-overlapping code.
- natural selection
- The process by which organisms with advantageous alleles are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing those alleles to their offspring and changing allele frequency over time.
