Example Question 2
Question: Iron(III) ions react with iodide ions in aqueous solution:
2 Fe3+ (aq) + 2 I− (aq) → 2 Fe2+ (aq) + I2 (aq)
(a) Use oxidation numbers to state which species is oxidised and which is reduced. (b) Identify the oxidising agent and the reducing agent. (c) Write the two half-equations.

Key terms in this lesson
- oxidising agent
- A substance that accepts electrons from another species, causing it to be oxidised, while it is itself reduced.
- reducing agent
- A substance that donates electrons to another species, causing it to be reduced, while it is itself oxidised.
- oxidation number
- A number assigned to an atom showing its degree of oxidation, based on the electrons it would gain or lose if all bonds were ionic.
