When an alkene such as propene is mixed with hydrogen gas and passed over a nickel catalyst at 423K, an alkane, propane, is formed. This reaction is used in the manufacture of margarine. The long, unsaturated hydrocarbons in vegetable oils are hydrogenated to form saturated fatty acids. The hydrogenated products have a higher melting point and are therefore solids at room temperature.
