Simple amines are named by adding -amine to the name of the alkyl group attached to the nitrogen.
• CH3NH2 is methylamine; CH3CH2NH2 is ethylamine (systematic name ethanamine)
• CH3CH2CH2NH2 is propylamine (propan-1-amine)
Secondary and tertiary amines with identical groups use di- and tri-: (CH3)2NH is dimethylamine and (CH3CH2)3N is triethylamine. If the groups are different, the smaller groups are given the prefix N- to show they are on the nitrogen: CH3CH2NHCH3 is N-methylethylamine.
