Exam questions about graphs use different command words, and each needs a different type of answer.
Describe means say what the graph shows. Give the overall trend, note any change in trend (for example where the line levels off or peaks), and quote data from the graph with units.
Explain means give biological reasons for the trend. Use scientific ideas such as active sites, enzyme-substrate complexes, limiting factors or water potential.

Key terms in this lesson
- active site
- The region of an enzyme, formed by the tertiary structure, with a shape complementary to its substrate, where the substrate binds.
- enzyme-substrate complex
- The temporary structure formed when a substrate binds to the active site of an enzyme.
- water potential
- The pressure created by water molecules, a measure of the tendency of water to move out of a solution; pure water has a water potential of zero and solutes make it more negative.
- limiting factor
- A factor that, when in short supply, restricts the rate of a process, such as the rate of photosynthesis or the growth of a population.
