A saturated hydrocarbon contains single bonds only. Every carbon atom is bonded to the maximum possible number of hydrogen atoms. The alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n+2, for example ethane C2H6. Cycloalkanes such as cyclohexane C6H12 are also saturated.Every bond in a saturated hydrocarbon is a σ bond, and each carbon is tetrahedral with bond angles of 109.5°.Saturated hydrocarbons are fairly unreactive because C-C and C-H bonds are strong and non-polar. They burn well as fuels and react with halogens only in ultraviolet light.
